BURNING PERMITS REQUIRED

State law requires a permit to conduct any outdoor burning whenever the ground is not snow-covered. The burn permit process is designed as a way to communicate when it is safe to burn yard and household debris, and how to do so appropriately. Air quality and solid waste regulations prohibit open burning of construction and demolition waste. You can obtain a burning permit at Chikaming Township Center at 13535 Red Arrow Hwy. in Harbert, MI. Remember : You are responsible for any fire, smoke, or odors created from open burning and for any damage that results from your fire.

Follow these safety rules:
  • Never leave a fire unattended. State law requires that outdoor fires be attended at all time.
  • Keep fires small.
  • Never burn when it is windy.
  • Always have a water supply and a shovel on hand.
  • Always use water to extinguish a fire. Keep adding water and stirring the ashes until no additional hot spots are found
  •
For more information regarding the regulation of open burning in Michigan, please contact the DEQ Environmental Assistance Center (EAC) at 1-800-662-9278 or go to the DEQ webstie at www.michigan.gov/deqair. Open burning material is located under "Spotlight".

In the event of a Pollution Emergency call: 1-800-292-4706.

When is a permit not needed? Burning in an approved debris burner does not require a permit. An approved debris burner is a masonry or metal container with a metal covering having openings no larger than ¾ inch. Campfires do not require a burning permit either. Also, you do not need a permit if the ground is snow-covered.

How to register your alarm system: You need to come into the Township Office and fill out the form and pay your fee. At that time you will receive a sticker for your window. The forms and stickers will be available starting December 1st. Also, if you have a false alarm, you will be notified of the need to register your alarm and the fine if you fail to do so.

Ways to Avoid False Alarms: The majority of false alarms are caused by human error. False alarms caused by human error are the easiest to prevent. It is extremely important that you understand how your alarm system works in order to prevent the unfortunate mistakes that can cause a police or fire dispatch to an alarm activation, when there is not a valid criminal act or fire.
